I’ve been wanting to write a blog post some time ago about the mysterious and sudden disappearance of the MySiteMyWay (MSMW) · Webtreats Theme developers, though I’m still not entirely sure it belongs here as a post. However, I’ll just go with my gut instincts on this one.
In light of what’s going on with Headway Themes, and now CobaltApps’ recent update, I thought now would be a good time to share this story, as well as the most recent developments.
(Note: this post deals with an industry topic that the WordPress community has been dealing with as of late. In case you are not familiar with the Headway Themes situation, feel free to get caught up here.)
For some background, I had purchased the Developer’s Package myself, when first getting started with WordPress some years ago. I have since moved to the StudioPress/Genesis Theme framework over the past couple of years. So I don’t have any ongoing financial interests with this company.
But I really haven’t seen anyone cover what has been going on as some within the user base have responded in a manner similar to how WordPress itself got it’s start.
Just the facts.
I think the best approach to telling this story is to break it out into the main parts. And I’ll just link to the details if that’s ok.
- The company founders abandon their product/customers without warning.
At least one attacker has tried to exploit the popular theme – vulnerable due to lack of updates is my guess.
Envato/Themeforest is still selling (at least listing, I haven’t tried making a purchase) 2 of the WordPress Themes.
One customer has been answering support questions in the forum and is taking the lead in trying to open source the theme framework to the community.
…But said Customer has run into a licensing snag over the 2 most popular themes still sold by Envato.
The most interesting bits to me are the last 2 developments, given the history behind Envato, WordPress, and the GPL. It’s an interesting situation that is still playing out, and I’m not totally sure what to make of it all.
But I am very curious as to what will be the final outcome.
